Phil Reed, director of the criminal justice program and assistant professor of criminal justice, has worked at the college since 2003. Reed teaches criminal investigations, ethical and moral issues, introduction to criminal justice, juvenile delinquency, police and community, and topics in criminology. He's also in charge of coordinating internships for students interested in the criminal justice field. Prior to his full-time appointment to Olivet's faculty, Reed served as the college's director of campus safety. He also served the Battle Creek Police Department for 25 years, retiring in 2003 as commander of investigations. He helped develop the Calhoun County Cold Case Homicide Team and was responsible for the detective bureau, the undercover narcotics team and the crime lab. Reed earned many commendations throughout his career in law enforcement, including recognition by the U.S. Attorney General's office for working to reduce crimes involving firearms via Operation Safe Neighborhoods. Reed earned a bachelor's degree in psychology and sociology from Hope College and law enforcement officer certification from the Kalamazoo Valley Regional Police Academy. He's also earned a master's degree in public administration from Western Michigan University.
