Gary Alan Smith (M.A.), who joined the Olivet College community in the fall of 2007, is the Director of the Journalism and Mass Communication program and the faculty advisor for the College’s FCC-licensed radio station, 89-7 WOCR-FM. 

Professor Smith was born and raised in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, received his B.A. degree in political science from the College of William and Mary and was awarded a Master of Arts degree in journalism and mass communication from the University of Colorado in Boulder.

Specializing in broadcast journalism, Smith came to the College after a successful career in commercial radio and television over a period of nearly twenty years.  He teaches courses in broadcast announcing, writing and production, and applied journalism and was the point man for the development of the new Convergent Media Center at the College.
