OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College senior swimmer Kellen Beckwith of Farmington Hills and senior men's basketball player Michael McClary of Bellaire share Comet of the Week honors for Feb. 7.
Beckwith posted the fastest time in three individual events and swam the backstroke leg of the winning 200 medley relay, as Olivet defeated Calvin College, 154-131, in its final Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet of the 2010-11 season. He won the backstroke events in school record times of :51.91 in the 100 and 1:54.68 in the 200. Beckwith stopped the clock at 2:00.92 in the 200 individual medley, and joined with Mike Harden, Rafe Maxwell and Matt Marquette for a pool record time of 1:36.19 in the medley relay.
Olivet will next compete at the 2011 MIAA Championships Feb. 17-19 at Jenison High School. Action starts each day with preliminaries at 10 a.m., and finals each each night at 6 p.m.
McClary scored 64 points and grabbed 29 rebounds, as he led the Comets to three consecutive wins and into a tie for second-place in the MIAA standings. He started the week with a double-double (18 points and 11 rebounds) in a 65-64 win at Albion Jan. 31. McClary then had 17 points and nine rebounds in a 45-38 win at Adrian Feb. 3 and ended his week with a 29 point, 10 rebound performance in a 71-69 win over Calvin Feb. 5. For the week, McClary made 26-of-59 (44.1 percent) from the floor and 12-of-13 from the free throw line.
For the season, McClary has scored a single-season school record 553 points. He leads the team in scoring (26.3 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg).
The Comets return to action Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. game at Hope College.
