OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College freshman swimmer Kristin Long, of Pemberville, Ohio, and senior swimmer Rafe Maxwell of Bay City are sharing Comet of the Week honors for Feb. 21.
Long posted personal best times in her three individual events Feb. 17-19 at the MIAA Championships. Her highest finish was fifth in the 400 individual medley, breaking the school record with a time of 4:46.58. Long first eclipsed the record in the preliminaries at 4:50.22, and then shattered it in the evening finals. She also finished in sixth-place in the 200 backstroke (2:13.74). Long won the consolation heat of the 200 IM to finish in ninth-place. Her time, 2:13.80, was only eight 1/100ths slower than the school record that was set by a teammate in the preliminaries.
Maxwell helped the Comets finish in third-place at the MIAA Championships and successfully defended his conference title in the 200 butterfly, lowering the school record to 1:53.61. He also finished in third-place in the 100 butterfly, :51.27, and placed 11th in the 200 IM, 1:59.98. Maxwell also swam the butterfly legs of the third-place 200 and 400 medley relays. Olivet time-trialed the 200 medley relay, breaking the school record with an NCAA Championships consideration cut (1:33.26).
Olivet's sports information office will select a Comet of the Week throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 academic year. The athlete will be featured on the home page of the athletics Web site at www.olivetcollege.edu/athletics.
