OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College seniors Michael McClary of Bellaire and Tiffany Thelen of Lansing are sharing Comet of the Week honors for Jan. 24.
Last week, McClary scored 82 points and grabbed 21 rebounds, as the Comets split a pair of MIAA contests. In a 90-83 win at Trine (Ind.) University Jan. 19, he scored a school record 43 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. McClary followed that performance with 39 points and 11 rebounds in an 80-73 loss to Kalamazoo College Jan. 22. For the week, he made 32-of-49 field goals (65.3 percent) and 18-of-23 free throw (78.3 percent).
For the season, McClary ranks second in NCAA Division III scoring at 27.1 points per game and averaging 9.8 rebounds per game. He needs just 24 points to become Olivet’s career leader.
The Comets will travel to play Alma College Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. and also be on the road Saturday at Albion College at 3 p.m.
Thelen provided a spark off the bench, helping the Comets win back-to-back MIAA contests last week. In a 66-65 win over Alma College Jan. 20, she scored a career-high 13 points and in a 70-52 win over Adrian College Jan. 22, Thelen contributed 10 points. She also grabbed five rebounds in each contest. Thelen was near perfect last week, making all eight of her field goals and 7-of-8 free throws.
Olivet will play two road games this week, Wednesday at Saint Mary's (Ind.) College at 7:30 p.m., and Saturday at Trine at 1 p.m.
Olivet's sports information office will select a Comet of the Week throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 academic year. The athlete will be featured on the home page of the athletics Web site at www.olivetcollege.edu/athletics.
