OLIVET, Mich. -- Olivet College sophomore Melanie Merchant of St. Joseph is the Comet of the Week for Oct. 18.
Merchant helped the Comets post a 3-2 record last week, including a four-set win at Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Saint Mary's (Ind.) College Oct. 12. Olivet reached double figures in wins for the first time in 25 years and only the fourth time in school history.
For the week, Merchant recorded a team-leading 57 kills. She had 21 attack errors on 114 attempts for a .316 hitting percentage. For the season, Merchant has 143 kills to go along with a .196 attack percentage and 25 blocks.
Olivet (10-10, 5-6 MIAA) has a pair of road matches this week, beginning tomorrow at Albion College. Match time at Kresge Gymnasium is 6:30 p.m.
Olivet's sports information office will select a Comet of the Week throughout the remainder of the 2010-11 academic year. The athlete will be featured on the home page of the athletics Web site at www.olivetcollege.edu/athletics.
