Men's Golf Team Hopes to Climb One More Spot
With three returning All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) golfers, the Olivet College men’s golf team hopes that 2008 will be the year that it can climb the final rung of the ladder and win the MIAA championship for the first time since 2002. The Comets have finished as the runner-up in each of the last two years.
By virtue of winning an MIAA championship, Olivet would also receive the league’s automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III National Championships.
Three seniors, Brock Gleadall (Stratford, Ontario/St. Michael’s Catholic), Justin Lesansky (LaSalle, Ontario/International) and Eric Ross (Burlington, Ontario/International) earned All-MIAA honors last year. Gleadall and Ross were first-team All-MIAA selections, while Lesansky was a second-team selection.
Each member of the aforementioned trio played in all of the 10 MIAA jamborees. Ross led the group with a 74.5 stroke average, including low rounds of 71 at two of the outings. Gleadall was next at 75.9 and Lesansky was third at 78.3.
Ross, Gleadall and Lesansky also had superior rounds during the spring season. Ross posted a 74.6 stroke average in seven rounds, including a 69 in the second round of the Denison (Ohio) University/Ted Barclay Spring Invitational. Lesansky and Gleadall had a 79.3 and 79.7 stroke average, respectively.
A fourth senior, Jacob Johnson (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) is also expected to help Olivet along the way. A year ago, he played in half of the MIAA jamborees and finished with an 81.0 stroke average.
Sophomore Nick Harless (DeWitt) was a part of the junior varsity team last year and is expected to compete for time in the starting lineup. In addition, four recruits who played in the state finals are going to push the returnees for a position on the varsity team.
As the only MIAA school with more than one All-MIAA golfer expected to return, Olivet has the players to win the championship. Now, it will be up to them to play to their potential.
