Meet Rachel Joseph
Rachel Joseph is a senior at L’Anse Creuse High School-North in Chesterfield, Mich. She is set to attend Olivet College this fall. As one of the newest members of the Olivet College family, we asked Rachel to share a few points with us about her experience.
What first attracted you to Olivet College?
I first learned of Olivet when my then high school band director, Jeremy Duby, became your director of bands. He is an incredible instructor and he told me I just had to come check out campus. I plan to major in pre-law, and I’m looking forward to class with Professor Noyes [Cynthia Noyes, Social Science Department chair and associate professor of sociology and anthropology]. She was so welcoming when I visited campus and met with her.
Speaking of your campus visit, what did you love most about Olivet?
What I love most about Olivet are the people. Everyone was so nice and friendly. Staff went out of their way to answer questions. My academic enrollment specialist was awesome, and I really appreciated the conversations I had with the faculty I met while on campus.
I know I already said this, but it’s true… everyone I met went out of their way to make me feel welcome. It felt like family. I really love that about Olivet.
What activities would you like to participate in while a student at Olivet College?
In high school, I was a member of the marching band and wind ensemble. So I’m very excited to be part of the band here, too. I’ve performed with talented musicians from all over the state while at Blue Lake Arts Camps and as a member of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Civic Ensemble. I had a chance to sit in on a band rehearsal while visiting campus, and I was really impressed with the level of talent here at Olivet. Professor Duby is known for pulling the best out of his students, and I can’t wait to be a part of his band again.
Why did you ultimately decide to attend Olivet College?
Ultimately, it is the opportunity for an amazing education surrounded by faculty, staff and students who care about me. The student to teacher ratio is perfect and I’m really excited to be a part of the music program. Prof. Duby is a motivating and inspiring instructor. I know he has big plans to expand the music program here at Olivet. I can’t wait to be a part of the band family.
After I came home from my first campus visit, I immediately called my best friend to come over so I could tell her all about it. I went on for more than an hour telling her how beautiful campus is and how much fun I had on my tour. She said it was the happiest I’ve ever been. Olivet is truly the place for me!
