Music Education Major (k-12)

A Bachelor of Arts degree in music education secondary teaching major requires a minimum major grade point average of 3.00. In order to be a music major or minor at Olivet College, you must audition for the music faculty. Students who would like to major in music must have a considerable background in music.

  • Your major ensemble and primary performing instrument/voice will be determined by consensus of the music faculty. The seven semester hours of ensemble and seven semester hours of private lessons must take place with these agreed-upon choices.
  • You must successfully complete a piano proficiency examination before the major will be awarded. This examination, administered by the piano faculty, will test your basic reading ability, knowledge of scales and arpeggios, ability to harmonize and transpose simple melodies, and further technical development. MUS 141 (Class Piano I) and MUS 142 (Class Piano II) may be waived if the student passes the piano proficiency exam.
  • Music majors are required to attend at least 10 music performances per academic year.
  • Music Theory and Aural Skills courses (MUS 111/112/211/212 and MUS 113/114/213/214) are sequences which require a grade of “C” or above in order to continue on to the next course in the sequence.
