Olivet College is seeking candidates for the position of Director of Bands

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Director of Bands will join the College at an exciting and opportune time. With its recently completed strategic plan, Charting the Course to 2020 and Beyond, the College has committed to rebuilding a strong and vibrant instrumental music program. As such, the instrumental music program will be a central focus of the college’s future, contributing to the vitality of the campus community, academic program, and student experience. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate in the creation of a new vision for the instrumental music program, anticipated to encompass athletic bands and other ensembles with a total participation target of 150 students.

The college music program has a rich history of strong alumni, donor, and foundation support which reached its pinnacle in the 1960’s through ‘80’s when enrollments were highest and resource investment was strongest, including the construction of the Upton Conservatory which continues to serve and support the music program today. The person in this expansion position has an opportunity to capitalize on renewed alumni, donor, and foundation interest in having the Olivet College instrumental music program return to its once prominent place within the College and across the region.       

RESPONSIBILITIES
This is a staff position with a primary responsibility to build a strong instrumental music program of 150 students and multiple ensembles.  It will entail heavy external recruiting, serving as director of the athletic band and other ensembles (to be determined as part of the visioning process) and providing assistance and support for the music program faculty and admissions staff in recruiting the general music major/minor population of the college.  Other duties will include serving as assistant director of the college wind ensemble, working collaboratively with the athletic and admissions departments on events and recruitment activities and managing a budget and scholarship program.  With appropriate credentials the opportunity exists for future appointment to the faculty.  This position reports directly to the provost.

REQUIREMENTS
A bachelor’s degree in music (instrumental music education preferred) and at least18 hours toward an appropriate advanced degree is required.  A master’s degree or higher is preferred.  Some travel and weekend/evening hours are expected.  Experience in conducting an ensemble and recruiting students is desired.
