Olivet College to celebrate inauguration of President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D.
Aug 24, 2011
Olivet College will celebrate the installation of Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., as its 27th president Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 1:30 p.m. on the college’s Blair Lawn.
Inauguration festivities will span two days, beginning with an Inaugural Dinner for special guests in Lansing Tuesday, Sept. 6. On Wednesday, a luncheon will be held preceding the ceremony in the Oaks Dining Room. (Please note, these two events are by invitation only. All other inaugural events are free and open to the public.)
A processional featuring delegates from various Michigan colleges and universities, as well as Olivet faculty and staff, will march to the official ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday on Blair Lawn. Following the ceremony, a reception for Olivet College employees with President Corey will be held in the Kirk Center lobby. From 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., the Office of Student Life will host a Community Block Party and the college’s annual Stand-up event.
The inaugural platform party includes Dr. Paul Burkhardt, executive vice president of Prescott College; Barbara Essex, minister for higher education and theological education for the United Church of Christ; Rev. Dr. Thomas Richard, executive secretary of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches; and Randal VanDyke, Olivet Community Schools interim superintendent. Olivet College Board of Trustees Chair David Hayhow will also speak at the ceremony, as well as key members of the Olivet College faculty and staff.
Dr. Corey was named president of Olivet College in December 2010. Since his arrival, he has engaged the college community in a comprehensive process of charting the course for the Olivet College of 2020 and Beyond, a process that will define the future of Olivet in the decades ahead.
Prior to joining Olivet, Dr. Corey served as executive vice president at Prescott College, where he was responsible for planning and directing all aspects of the college’s administrative and operational policies, objectives and initiatives. While at Prescott College, he also served as an associate Ph.D. faculty member and as an adjunct faculty member in the areas of higher education finance, higher education organization and administration, nonprofit management and other business management-related areas.
Dr. Corey was born and raised in Clovis, Calif., and is married to Traci, also a native of central California. They reside in Olivet with their daughter, Karli Samantha.
In case of inclement weather, the inauguration ceremony will be held in the college’s Cutler Event Center.
