Olivet College announces new academic programs for the 2011 fall semester
Aug 24, 2011

Olivet College is offering two new academic programs at the start of the 2011 fall semester. The new areas of study include a health science major and an environmental education concentration in the environmental science major. Classes begin Tuesday, Aug. 30.

The college’s new health science major provides interdisciplinary education in biology, chemistry and psychology for students who hope to enter nursing school or a graduate program in the health sciences field. In order to be accepted into the program, students must demonstrate academic excellence in their first semester at Olivet College by earning an overall grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher, with a minimum course grade of 3.0 in all required major classes. The GPA requirement is intended to keep students competitive with other students who are applying to second degree Bachelor of Science in nursing programs. Health science majors often go on to earn Master of Science degrees in nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees at qualified institutions.

Olivet’s Department of Natural and Physical Sciences is now offering an environmental education concentration as an option to the already-existing environmental science major. The concentration incorporates a range of science classes that provide the breadth of subject areas an environmental educator may need to teach, with particular focus on environment and field-based classes. As declared environmental science majors, graduates could also be hired for other environmental jobs, including careers that combine education with field work such as habitat restoration or wildlife conservation. Olivet College already has numerous alumni who are environmental educators in a wide range of applications, from zoos and environmental institutes to government and corporate settings.

Applications are still being accepted for the 2011 fall semester. To apply, visit www.olivetcollege.edu/new_students/apply.php or call 1-800-456-7189.
