Master calligrapher and painter to present at Olivet College Nov. 13
Oct 27, 2011

Dr. Paul Wang, master calligrapher and painter of Chinese landscapes, will present a lecture and demonstration Sunday, Nov. 13 from 1:45 to 3 p.m. at Olivet College’s Riethmiller Blackman Art Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Wang, who is also a dermatologist, was born in Canton, China and raised in Chung King, China during World War II. He started training at the age of 13 with the eminent Chinese landscape artist, Huang Chunpei, who, along with Chang Da-chien and Pu Ye, served as the three dominating figures of the Chinese painting scene during his youth.

Wang’s artistic style is described as “totally traditional, meaning classical Chinese without the slightest trace of Western influence,” and the instruments he uses, including traditional ink, ink stone, brushes and paper, are the same as those used in Chinese painting and calligraphy for centuries.

Wang has featured several solo demonstrations and exhibitions in Michigan, New York and China. Several of his works have also been successfully auctioned at Christie’s in New York, a feat seldom accomplished by living artists. In addition, he owns and operates the Paul Wang Gallery in Richland.
