Damico breaks course record, women’s golf team wins MIAA Jamboree no. 1
Sep 21, 2012

Junior Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) broke the course record, as the Olivet College women’s golf team began defense of its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship with a first-place finish today at the first league jamboree at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.

Damico carded a 72 to tie for the third-best, 18-hole round in MIAA history and break the previous course record at The Medalist by three strokes, which was a 75 by Lauren Campbell on April 14, 2010. Furthermore, Damico’s 72 also ties for the second-best, 18-hole score in Olivet history. The other 72s in school history were by Campbell on Oct. 8, 2011 and Lindsay Pipkin on April 5, 2009.

In today’s round, the Comets posted a 324 team score. Hope took second-place at 336, while Saint Mary’s (Ind.) and Calvin shared third-place with 338s. Trine (Ind.) was fifth at 361, followed by Adrian (389), Albion (397) and Kalamazoo (444).

Damico’s 72 included a 37 on the front nine and 35 on the back nine. Overall, she had pars on 14 holes, birdies on two holes and bogies on two holes. Junior Adrienne Plourde (Redford/Thurston) completed her round in 80 total strokes to share third-place in the player standings with Hope’s Brittany Haight. After struggling with a 43 on the front nine, she rallied back with a 37 on the back nine, including birdies on holes No. 10, 17 and 18.

Freshman Casey Lamp (Kalamazoo/Hackett Catholic) shot the best round of her collegiate career with an 84, which tied her for eighth-place in the player standings. Junior Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) finished with an 88, and freshman Brooke Kastamo (Howell/Hartland) rounded out Olivet’s starting five with a 93.

The Comets will play in the second MIAA Jamboree Saturday at Pine River Country Club in Alma.
