Olivet College radio station granted license renewal
Oct 25, 2012
Olivet College’s radio station, WOCR 89.1, The One, has been granted an eight-year license renewal by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The station was first licensed by the FCC in 1975, and the renewed license grants WOCR full operational status through October of 2020. WOCR is a student-operated, noncommercial, educational station that offers students from all disciplines the opportunity to produce radio programming and gain valuable professional experience in mass communications. The station operates at an assigned frequency of 89.1 megahertz on the FM spectrum with 500 watts of power and live streams all of its programming on the web at www.wocrfm.com. Students in Olivet College’s journalism and mass communication (JMC) program can receive academic credit for working at WOCR and some students are also able to participate in the college work-study employment program by joining the station’s staff. In addition to a variety of music programs, WOCR also presents live coverage of a weekly High School Game of the Week and live coverage of Olivet College football and basketball games. According to Gary Smith, assistant professor and JMC program director and advisor to WOCR, the station’s mission is “to serve the college and the surrounding communities while giving students an incredibly valuable opportunity to develop their communication skills by working in a professional atmosphere.” « Back
