Olivet College to host Abbie M. Copps poetry reading Nov. 15
Oct 29, 2012

Olivet College will host the 46th Abbie M. Copps Poetry Reading Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. in Dole Hall’s Klock Commons. The event is free and open to the public.

Since 1963, unpublished poems from across the world have been sent to Olivet College and judged as part of the Abbie M. Copps Poetry Competition. Cash prizes are awarded, and top poems are printed in the Garfield Lake Review, the college’s annual journal of literary writing and artwork. The winning poem and honorable mentions will be read by poet Mary Jo Gillett, the 2012 competition judge.

Gillett’s collection Soluble Fish won the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry First Book Award. Her poems have appeared in The Harvard Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, The Southern Review, Gettysburg Review, Third Coast, Green Mountain Review and other journals. Gillett is a recipient of the NY Open Voice Award, a Creative Artist Grant from ArtServe Michigan and several Pushcart Prize nominations. In addition, she was awarded a 2012 Kresge Artist Fellowship.

For more information on the competition and reading, contact Martha Perkins, Ph.D., professor of humanities, at mperkins@olivetcollege.edu.
