Olivet College Kirk Center listed as Top Modern Building in Michigan
Dec 17, 2012

Olivet College’s Lester K. Kirk Center has been listed as one of the Top 100 Modern Buildings in Michigan, according to a study conducted by Lord, Aeck & Sargent for the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office (MSHPO).

The list was compiled as part of Michigan Modern, a project launched by the MSHPO to document the state’s Modern design heritage from 1940 to 1970.

Olivet College broke ground on the Lester K. Kirk Center, named for its board chair, in 1960. Constructed by Meathe, Kessler & Associates, the building was officially dedicated Sept. 15, 1963. The facility is currently home to the college’s cafeteria, bookstore and media center, as well as the Oaks Dining Room and Comet Cafe.

In addition to documenting the state’s rich history of Modern design, Michigan Modern identifies the Michigan-based architects and designers that championed the Modern Movement and captures their oral histories. The project includes the Michigan work of renowned Modern architects, such as Ludwig Mies van de Rohe and Marcel Breuer.

According to the Michigan Modern website, the goal of the project is to change how people view Michigan by focusing on the state’s dynamic and ongoing design heritage.
