Olivet College to host world renowned artist Jim Hay

Olivet College is hosting a workshop featuring internationally renowned artist Jim Hay Saturday, Jan. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 20 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Dole Hall’’s Klock Commons. The event, titled “For the Love of Cloth” Quilters’’ Workshop, is open to the public.

The cost for the two-day workshop is $90 and participants will need to bring the following materials: scissors or pinking shears; straight pins; iron; three pieces of black cotton cloth (28”x28”); bag full of wide ranging cloth pieces; and a sewing machine, preferably with zig-zag ability, as well as extra bobbins and a range of colored threads.

An award-winning artist who currently lives and works in Japan, Hay has exhibited his art across the globe in countries including China, Guam, Korea and Taiwan, as well as Japan and the United States. He was professor of sculpture and drawing at Olivet College from 1968-80. Prior to teaching at Olivet, Hay earned both a Master of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts with high honors from Michigan State University. To view his work, visit http://www7.wind.ne.jp/jimhay/.

Hay’’s work will also be featured on campus in the “Battle Creek Artist Guild Group Exhibition,” which takes place Thursday, Jan. 17 through Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the Riethmiller Blackman Art Building’’s Kresge Art Gallery. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. An artists’’ reception will take place Saturday, Jan. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
