Olivet College to host Battle Creek Artist Guild exhibition
Jan 15, 2013

The Olivet College Visual Arts Department is hosting an exhibition featuring the work of the Battle Creek Artist Guild Thursday, Jan. 17 through Tuesday, Feb. 12 in the Riethmiller Blackman Art Building’s Kresge Art Gallery.

The display is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. or by appointment. An artists’ reception will be held Saturday, Jan. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. Both the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.

The Battle Creek Artist Guild was formed in the fall of 1973 when a group of artists gathered at Joanna Learner’s home in Battle Creek to discuss the idea of joining together to form an association. Many of the artists were teaching or working as studio artists. They agreed that a guild would allow them opportunities to gather and discuss their art, to share ideas and resources and to plan individual and group exhibits. The guild held their first exhibits in 1975 at Battle Creek Civic Theater, the Battle Creek Civic Art Center, Kellogg Community College and Olivet College.

Though currently inactive, the original purpose of the Battle Creek Artist Guild, to provide support and encouragement for area artists and visual arts in the community, still exists. Members have gone on to succeed in their field of art and are still contributing greatly to the enrichment of their communities.

The Olivet College exhibition marks the 40th anniversary of the guild and features the work of members Hugh Acton, Dick Babcock, Craig Bishop, Ken Freed, Jim Hay, Martin Hubbard, Sarah Hubbard, Tom Johnson, Michael Kifer, Joanna Learner, Ann Lipkowitz, Denise Lisiecki, Jerry Mackey, Dorothy Rollert, Don Rowe, Sue Rowe, Dallas Shoesmith and Charlotte Whitney Stevens. It is held in memory of Bill Betts, John Claggett, Peg Claggett, Kay Randels and Bill Whitney.
