Olivet College to celebrate Founders' Day Feb. 20
Feb 07, 2013

Olivet College will commemorate its 169th year by celebrating Founders’ Day Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the Olivet Congregational Church.

This year’s program features Olivet College President Steven M. Corey, Ph.D., and keynote speaker Jason Conkin, regional vice president and commercial casualty underwriter of Arch Capital Group in Chicago and a 1997 Olivet alumnus. A wreath laying procession and ceremony to Father John J. Shipherd’s grave will immediately follow the program, which will continue with a reception in the Kirk Center with cookies and hot chocolate. All events are free and open to the public.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in insurance from Olivet College, Conkin began his career at Burns and Wilcox in Farmington Hills. A year later he moved to Chicago to work with General Star Management, and in 2002, he began serving Arch Capital Group, a global insurance and reinsurance limited liability company.

Continuing with the college’s academic vision of Education for Individual and Social Responsibility, Conkin has dedicated much of his time to guiding Olivet insurance students with resumes, internships and career placement. He has also been very involved in building alumni relations for the Adelphic Alpha Pi Greek society and has mentored Adelphic students since 2009.

Olivet was founded in 1844 by congregational missionaries led by Father John J. Shipherd and was one of the first colleges in the United States to admit women and minorities. In 1859, a state charter was granted, and in 1863, Olivet graduated its first class, which consisted of three women.
