Borg named Risk Manager in Residence at Olivet College
Mar 04, 2013
Douglas J. Borg, DFASHRM, director of insurance at Duke University Health System, has been named Olivet College’s first-ever Risk Manager in Residence. The college was awarded a $3,000 grant from Spencer Educational Foundation, Inc., to participate in its Risk Manager in Residence Program, which will take place on campus March 25-27. The program is intended to give students an opportunity to interact with risk management professionals and see firsthand how the risk management discipline is applied outside of academia.
“We are looking very forward to hosting Dr. Borg – Duke University is a leader in the development of enterprise risk management,” said Carol Breed, J.D., professor of risk management and insurance, and director of the Risk Management and Insurance Center at Olivet College.
“Our risk management studies are moving away from traditional risk management to the more holistic enterprise risk management. We are excited to hear firsthand what is happening at Duke University and we are eager to hear suggestions from Dr. Borg on how Olivet College can move forward with our enterprise risk management plans.”
Borg has been director of insurance at Duke University Health System since 2007. He is responsible for the insurance management and loss control activities that support Duke’s captive-insured professional liability program. Prior to his current position, he served as director of risk management for Duke University Medical Center for more than 13 years.
Borg holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Eastern Mennonite University, and earned his Master in Health Administration from the Medical College of Virginia in 1991. He has presented locally and nationally on various topics and contributed to several publications, including a chapter in the fifth edition of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM)’s Risk Management Handbook.
He has a history of leadership in the field of healthcare risk management, having served on boards and committees at both the state and national level. Borg has been twice-elected president of the North Carolina Chapter of ASHRM, and served as president of the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management in 2008. He currently serves on the board of directors for the International Center for Captive Insurance Education and the Editorial Review Board for the ASHRM Journal of Healthcare Risk Management.
During his three-day visit, Borg will address classes and lead a workshop with Olivet College’s risk management, insurance and financial planning majors; attend a reception with students, faculty and local industry professionals; speak to two meetings of Gamma Iota Sigma, the college’s risk management, insurance and financial planning professional society; and join the Olivet College Insurance Program Advisory Committee meeting.
