Winters named first Cutler Fellow at Olivet College

Lindsey Winters, a junior from Plymouth, was awarded the first Olivet College David Cutler ‘65 Fellowship during the college’s annual Honors Convocation April 17.

Created to honor loyal alumnus David Cutler, the Cutler Fellowship is a merit award granted to a student entering his or her junior or senior year of study in mathematics, science, and/or computer science, and who demonstrates excellence in academic achievement and a high level of motivation. The award is presented with the expectation that the recipient make a substantial contribution to the advancement of mathematics, science, and/or computer science at Olivet College during his or her year as a “Cutler Fellow.”

A double major in math and computer science, Winters holds a 3.79 grade point average and has been named to the Deans List and President’s List numerous times throughout her college career. She is a member of Olivet’s Society of Hosford Scholars, Sigma Zeta honor society, Association for Women in Mathematics and Mathletes. She is also a member of the women’s soccer team and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Winters plans to pursue a career in mathematics, utilizing her skills in data analysis and programming.

A 1965 Olivet College graduate, David Cutler earned a degree in mathematics. He began a career with Microsoft in 1988 and currently serves the company as Senior Technical Fellow.

Cutler is the key technical brain behind the 50 million lines of code constituting Microsoft’s flagship product, the Windows operating system. Generally considered one of the top programmers worldwide, he was one of eight laureates to receive a National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President George W. Bush in 2008. In 2012, Cutler joined the Xbox team at Microsoft.

Cutler has been a dedicated and generous supporter of Olivet College, contributing to a number of projects and programs over the years including: The Cutler Event Center and Athletic Complex, Doris Laimbeer Fitness Center, curriculum development, athletic teams, academic excellence and more.
