Olivet College students assist with Eaton Area Special Olympics Field Day
May 28, 2013

By Sarah K. Smith, senior

Nearly 100 Olivet College students and employees assisted with the Eaton Area Special Olympics Field Day held May 7 in Eaton Rapids. Olivet faculty members worked with Kiwanis and Special Olympics in order to make the event possible. Volunteers from local high schools participated in the event as well.

The OC students and high school students worked together, giving older participants an opportunity to work with and mentor the younger ones. Volunteers helped with a variety of tasks throughout the day, such as running events, partnering up with the athletes, and setting up and taking down events. In addition, the volunteers were a critical component in the cheering section while the athletes competed.

“Seeing the OC spirit spread throughout the day was incredible,” said Kathryn Perry, assistant professor of health and human performance and Olivet’s coordinator for the event. “Special Olympics is one of the organizations that, every time I work with them, I feel I gain more than I give.”
