Local Olivet College graduate to study at Florence Academy of Art
Jun 20, 2013

Stephanie Craw, Marshall resident and 2013 graduate of Olivet College, will study landscape painting under master painter Daniela Astone at the Florence Academy of Art beginning July 1.

During the month-long program, Craw will travel to various sites throughout Florence to paint. She will also visit the Macchiaioli collection of landscape paintings at the Modern Art Gallery at the Pitti Palace analyzing masterworks and discussing the processes and necessities of a successful landscape painting.

“Olivet College Professor Cynthia Eller assiduously researched various opportunities for me to study abroad before finding the Florence Academy of Art’s Landscape Painting Workshop,” said Craw. “She worked hard to find an adventurous, academic and safe opportunity for me to explore, learn and widen my horizons as an artist.”

Craw plans to student teach this fall at Mar Lee School near Marshall. She will graduate from Olivet in December with a double major in visual arts with a studio arts concentration, and visual arts teaching with a concentration in painting.

“Stephanie is enthusiastic, devoted, intelligent and a true leader,” said Eller, who is an assistant professor of art at Olivet. “She is a great painter and passionate about her work. She was an easy choice.”

This opportunity is the first of its kind for Olivet art majors, but something the college would like to expand upon for future students.

“Our plan is to look at the complete student,” Eller added. “We can cater the experience to the individual.”

Astone, principal instructor of intensive drawing and painting with the academy, shows her work regularly with the Ann Long Fine Arts Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina. She also has works in private collections in Italy and the United States.
