Leaders and Legends - Olivet College and Thomas M. Cooley Law School host Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame Induction
Jul 19, 2013

The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame will honor three outstanding leaders, legends, and innovators in the insurance industry during its 20th annual induction ceremony Wednesday, Aug. 21 at The Lansing Country Club. This year’s honorees are:

Frank Dick

Dick came to Gleaner Life Society in 1978, following a distinguished career as an educator. He focused on products and services that would attract families who believe in providing for their loved ones, who plan for personal financial security, and who are committed to the idea of doing good things for other people. The Society has experienced amazing growth through Dick’s leadership as Chairman of the Board, President, and Chief Executive Officer. One of Dick’s guiding philosophies has been “think big, act small.” This work ethic has resulted in higher levels of attention to details and quality service. Under Dick’s guidance, the Society has remained “the right size” and bucked the corporate trend by resisting mergers and “growing your own.” He is both a leader and a cheerleader depending upon which is needed to reach the objective.

Michael Larges

Throughout his career Larges has demonstrated both a keen interest and an outstanding ability to take issues that were important to the insurance industry and communicate them in a thoughtful and practical manner. During his career he has served as a member of the Legislative Committee of the Michigan Association of Insurance Agents (MAIA) serving as a resource and “sounding board” to legislators throughout the state. In this capacity he has successfully communicated the potential impact of pending legislation to both the insurance industry and the agent force statewide. His passion and expertise in this area has now expanded beyond the boundaries of the state of Michigan. He currently serves on both the Independent Insurance Agents & Brokers of America’s Government Affairs Committee and also as the Chairman of the IIABA Political Action Committee (InsurPac) helping to raise $1 million annually to help carry the message of agents to Capitol Hill.

David E. Smithkey

Smithkey entered the financial services business in 1981 and retired on September 1, 2009 as President/Principal of Security First Benefits Corporation in Flint. During those 28 years David accomplished much in the name of serving his clients, industry, and community. He is past-president of the Greater Flint Chapter of the Insurance and Financial Advisors. His is also past-president of NAAIFA Michigan, past member of the Million Dollar Round Table, the Association of Advanced Life Underwriters, the Association of Health Underwriters, the Association of Health Advisors, The American College, Society of Financial Service Professions, the Golden Key Society, the Flint Estate Planning Council, and contributed more than $27,000 to MAIFA’s Political Action Committee.
