Olivet College's WOCR names sports broadcast team
Sep 19, 2013
Two Olivet College sophomores have been named to lead the college’s sports broadcasting team. Travis Oberlin, a graduate of Bellevue High School, will anchor the broadcasts on the college radio station, WOCR89.1, “The One.” Oberlin is a journalism and mass communications major at the college. WOCR faculty adviser Gary Smith has also named Oberlin as sports director for the station. Providing color commentary for the broadcasts is Tyler Shaver, a graduate of Olivet High School. Shaver is majoring in the sciences at Olivet College.
Oberlin says he loves being involved with the radio station and says, “I’m very excited about broadcasting the games this year because it gives me great experience and the chance to do what I love.” Shaver says, “I am passionate about sports and love to cover the games live.” Oberlin and Shaver also team up for a live sports talk show, “The Call,” every Friday afternoon from 2:30 until 4:30 p.m. on WOCR.
During football season, the WOCR sports team will provide live coverage of a High School Game of the Week on Friday nights beginning at 6:45 p.m. On Saturday afternoons Oberlin and Shaver will man the microphones for live coverage of Olivet College varsity football games. Smith, journalism and mass communication program director at Olivet, says the live sports broadcasts are “an incredible training ground for college broadcasters, a great service to the high schools in the region, and an important tool for connecting Olivet students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni with the Comet sports teams.”
Olivet College games will be broadcast live Sept. 21 and 28; Oct. 5, 12 and 26; and Nov. 2, 9 and 16.
The High School Game of the Week schedule is as follows:
Sept. 27: Parchment @ Olivet
Oct. 4: Camden Frontier @ Bellevue
Oct. 11: Pennfield @ Olivet
Oct. 18: Constantine @ Olivet
Oct. 25: Morrice @ Bellevue
WOCR is an FCC-licensed, non-commercial, educational radio station broadcasting over the air at 89.1 on the FM radio dial, and all programming is streamed live on the Internet at www.wocrfm.com.
