Olivet College Hosford Scholars to host Literacy Night
Oct 16, 2013

Students of Fern Persons Elementary School in Olivet will receive more than 200 new books as part of Literacy Night Monday, Oct. 28 at 6 p.m. in Olivet College’s Burrage Library. The free event is hosted by the college’s Society of Hosford Scholars, a student organization promoting academic success on campus.

The Olivet College students worked to collect donations during the summer to purchase new children’s books for the elementary students. With the help of local businesses and the Olivet College campus community, they were able to purchase hundreds of books while also organizing an event to promote children’s literacy.

“The Society of Hosford Scholars wanted to create a project that would benefit the local community,” said Tricia Mullins, a senior special education major and president of the society. “We thought Literacy Night would be a great educational activity that could benefit school children long after the event is held. The society is truly thankful to the local businesses that contributed to the project.”

In addition to handing out the books, society members will dress in costumes and will read to the elementary students. The event also features games and activities.

Local businesses that contributed to the project include: Big City Dogs; Eagles Nest Caf; Eaton Federal Savings Bank of Olivet; Lamplighter OC; Main Street Stylers, LLC; Linda McGuire of Olivet Machine and Tool; members of the Olivet College campus community; Olivet Pharmacy; and Tim’s Pizza.
