Student scholars to speak as part of Olivet College Dean's Scholars Series
Nov 14, 2013

Two Olivet College seniors will speak as part of the distinguished Dean’s Scholar Series Monday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Burrage Library.

Alex deFinta, a special education major from Marshall, will present his paper titled “The Biergarten of Eden: a Locus Amoenus of the Germanic Warrior Tradition.” In this paper, deFinta argues that though the classic topos of the locus amoenus does not align with the ideals of the Germanic warrior tribes of the Middle Ages, the term should apply to stories that reference Germanic ideals of a “pleasant place:” an earthly representation of the places in the afterlife aspired to by men of the Viking tradition. This is deFinta’s second time presenting his work; he was invited to speak on the topic during the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Consortium at Albion College in April.

Carrie Jacob, a writing major from Albion, will present readings from her summer fellowship at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute in Hastings. The competitive Nature in Words Fellowship is designed to develop the writer’s creativity by deepening his or her appreciation of nature and the sciences. Jacob’s experience at the institute culminated in a complete body of written work, including poems and essays.

This event is free and open to the public.
