Olivet College Dean's Scholar Series cancelled for Monday night
Jan 24, 2014

NOTE: Due to weather, this event has been cancelled

Film directors Gary Smith and Mary Jo Ramsey-Smith will present their documentary, “Soul Tenders,” as part of Olivet College’s Dean’s Scholar Series Monday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in Mott Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

The 65-minute documentary explores the lives of nine women who “embrace the sacred in the simple beauties of each day.”

Many of the women spotlighted in the film have been friends of the couple for more than 20 years. The camera captures their daily lives as midwives, healers and mothers. It also explores their views about everything from home births to natural medicine.

“’Soul Tenders’ explores alternative ways of seeing and being in the world at a time when our planet faces monumental challenges,” said Smith, who serves as assistant professor of journalism and mass communication at the college.

Supported in part by Olivet College’s professional development fund, the film earned an honorable mention at the 2010 Los Angeles Film Festival and was an official selection in the 2012 Grand Rapids ArtPrize. To view the trailer, visit www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dWwMVOfAjk.
