Olivet College students to perform in 2014 Michigan Intercollegiate Honor Band
Jan 31, 2014
Update: Due to inclement weather, this event has been cancelled.
Three Olivet College music students will perform in the 42nd annual Michigan Intercollegiate Honor Band at the Goodrich Chapel on Albion College’s campus Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
The band is a joint collaboration between Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hillsdale, Hope and Olivet colleges, and Cornerstone and Spring Arbor universities. Students in the band are nominated by their conductor and come together for one day of rehearsals, capped by the concert in the evening.
Conductor Jeremy Duby nominated the Olivet students, who include: Levi Armstrong, a junior from Charlotte, alto saxophone; Nicholas Harmon, a freshman from Holt, trumpet; and Helen MacQueen, a senior from Hastings, oboe.
Duby, who is in his first year as director of bands at Olivet College, said the event displays a partnership between the other institutions and students.
“The students get a real professional musical experience, and get to share different experiences and studies with fellow musicians from the state of Michigan,” he said. “This is a great honor and experience for our students.”
The guest conductor this year is Robert L. Spradling, Ph.D., director of bands emeritus at Western Michigan University.
