OLIVET, Mich. The Olivet College theatre program will be holding auditions for the musical The Threepenny Opera on Aug. 25 and 26 from 7 to 9 p.m. in Olivets Oaks Theatre. Actors should bring a piece of music to sing.
Members of the community are welcome to audition. There are more than 15 parts available for adult singers, actors and members of the stage crew.
Written by Betrolt Brecht with music by Kurt Weill, the script is based on John Gays play The Beggars Opera, telling the tale of the gangster Macheath (Mack the Knife,) his associates, his lovers and the beggars who roamed and ruled the London streets in the 1830s. The story is scandalous, the music is raw and rowdy, and the characters are haunting.
The Threepenny Opera will be performed Oct. 30, 31 and Nov. 1 at the Oaks Theatre. Joanne Williams, an instructor of journalism and theatre at the college, is directing the musical, and Timothy Flynn, Ph.D., assistant professor of music and director of choral music at Olivet, is the musical director.
