Olivet College hosts Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame Inductions
Aug 28, 2003
OLIVET, Mich. The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame will honor three insurance industry leaders at its tenth annual induction ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 on the campus of Olivet College. The honorees include Douglas G. Heeter, Ph.D., CLU, CPCU, of Big Rapids; Harry G. Iwasko, Jr. of Lansing; and H. Max Tanner, CPCU, of Traverse City.
Doc Heeter, as he is affectionately known by alumni and friends in the insurance industry, is a professor of insurance and director of insurance programs at Ferris State University. It is estimated that he has taught nearly 7,000 students in the Ferris State Insurance Program. His passion for the business and clever way of making the study of insurance interesting and fun has attracted many into careers in the Michigan insurance business.
Iwasko served Michigan as Assistant Attorney General for insurance matters from 1959 to 1998. He was involved in some of the landmark legal decisions involving insurance during his 39 years with the Attorney Generals office. He defended the constitutionality of the No-Fault Act and acted quickly to protect the interests of policyholders and the public when financially troubled insurance companies were identified.
Tanner served Auto-Owners Insurance Company in a variety of positions for more than 42 years, retiring in 1990 as Chairman of the Board and CEO. Tanner led the Auto-Owners Insurance Company with great success, was a strong advocate of professional education, was active in a number of business organizations and made significant contributions to community organizations, including the Public Broadcasting System and Sparrow Hospital.
The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame was established at Olivet College in 1994 as a way to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the Michigan insurance and risk management industry. An election panel, representing a cross-section of the insurance and risk management business, identifies leaders or innovators who have made significant contributions in five areas: education, exemplary service, legislative activity, product/service development and recruiting new participants.
