Local author to speak at Olivet College Jan. 14

OLIVET, Mich.Sonya Bernard-Hollins, author of Here I stand: The stories behind the musical legends of Battle Creek, will present as part of Olivet Colleges Lecture and Symposium Series Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 1:30 p.m. in the colleges Mott Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. A group of historians and musicians will join Bernard-Hollins to discuss how Battle Creek was instrumental in developing musicians who went on to become music icons. Bernard-Hollins completed her book after five years of research on the citys musical past. It features the history of African-American musicians in Battle Creek from the early 1800s to the present. She has been recognized by the Associated Press of Michigan and the Michigan Press Association for her work as the feature editor at the Battle Creek Enquirer. She has also received a fellowship from the Newspaper Association of America to attend the Poynter Institute for Journalists and is a member of various organizations in the Battle Creek area. Following the presentation, Bernard-Hollins will be available to sign copies of her book. « Back
