Olivet College professor to present photo essay March 31
Mar 23, 2004

OLIVET, Mich. Gary Wertheimer, chair of the Olivet College Arts and Communication Department, is presenting a photo essay titled Traditional Bronze and Gold Casting in Ivory Coast, West Africa, on Wednesday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Burrage Library lecture room. The event, which is free and open to the public, is hosted by Sigma Beta, an Olivet College sorority.

Wertheimers lecture will include a personal slide presentation of his trip to Ivory Coast, West Africa, in which he photo-documented traditional bronze and gold casting, gold leafing and iron-smithing as it is still practiced in rural villages. In addition to step-by-step processes in metal work, he will present a travelogue of his visit including images of traditional dance, culinary arts and village life. Wood sculptures, bronze castings and many other objects will be on display.

Wertheimer joined the Olivet College faculty in 1986. He earned a bachelors degree in art from Brooklyn College and a masters in fine arts in sculpture from the University of Michigan. His work, which has been exhibited across the country, includes bronze casting, stone carving and direct metal work.
