Al Swain to speak at Olivet College

OLIVET, Mich. Al Swain, associate director of the Capitol Area Center for Independent Living (CACIL) in Lansing, will speak at Olivet College about disability awareness, diversity and the importance of positive self-image on Wednesday, Sept. 15 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Mott Auditorium. His presentation is part of the colleges Lecture and Symposium Series. The event is free and open to the public. Swain, a person who is blind and a wheelchair user due to Multiple Sclerosis (MS), is a 1978 graduate of Olivet. He attended the Michigan School for the Blind in Lansing where he was valedictorian and a three-year most valuable athlete on the wrestling team. Upon graduation, he came to Olivet with intentions to join the wrestling program. His plans were deterred due to his sudden development of MS at the beginning of his freshman year.
Swain joined CACIL in 1981 and has served as the associate director since 1999.
