Winston S. Churchill III to deliver Olivet College commencement address

OLIVET, Mich. Olivet College will recognize approximately 170 candidates for graduation during commencement exercises Sunday, May 22. Baccalaureate begins at noon in the Olivet Congregational Church followed by commencement at 2 p.m., at the colleges Cutler Athletic Complex. Winston S. Churchill III, grandson and namesake of Britains wartime prime minister, is scheduled to speak during commencement. Eric Martin of Detroit, is the senior class speaker. During the event, Churchill will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters from the college. Speaking at baccalaureate are seniors Allison Choike of Twentynine Palms, Calif.; Michelle Simmon of DeWitt; and James Wyszynski III of Grand Ledge. Choike, Martin, Simmon and Wyszynski were chosen by their classmates to speak. In 1970 Churchill began his tenure as a Conservative Member of Parliament. He was appointed a Front-bench spokesman on Defense by Margaret Thatcher in 1976 and was a member of the Defense Select Committee of the House of Commons until 1997. For many years, Churchill was a journalist and war correspondent, reporting on conflicts in Angola, Biafra, Borneo, the Congo, the Middle East, Vietnam and Yemen. While reporting in Vietnam, he took part in combat missions with the United States Air Force. He later became a roving foreign correspondent for The Times of London.
