Olivet College student receives Michigan Campus Compact award
May 03, 2005

OLIVET, Mich. Melanie Engels, a freshman at Olivet College, received the Michigan Campus Compact (MCC) Commitment to Service Award. She was honored for her volunteer work at Hayes Green Beach Hospital in Charlotte.

Engels, of Battle Creek, has volunteered in the hospital pharmacy once a week since September 2004. She learned how to make medical kits, repackage medicine and how to translate a generic name into a brand name product. Engels also volunteers at Maple Valleys Maplewood Elementary School and helps with sixth-grade science labs.

Engels previously volunteered at the American Red Cross, Battle Creek Volunteer Society and Humane Society.

At Olivet, she is a member of Alpha Pi Upslion, the pre-medical honor society; Global Citizen Honors Program; science club; and plays the saxophone in the wind and jazz ensembles.

MCC is a state-level, non-profit organization that promotes the education and commitment of Michigan college students to be civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement.
