Olivet College welcomes new student from Dillard University
Sep 09, 2005

OLIVET, Mich. In a continued effort to assist residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina, Olivet College has welcomed Dillard University student Miranda Walson to campus. She began classes Friday, Sept. 9.

Walson, of Lansing, began classes at Dillard University in New Orleans on Aug. 22. Later that week, she had to evacuate because of hurricane conditions along the Gulf Coast. Dillard University is not open for students to return because of excessive damage from Hurricane Katrina.

Walson will be a senior at Olivet, majoring in criminal justice. She is a 2002 graduate of Lansing Everett High School and was a member of two state championship womens basketball teams. Prior to attending Dillard, she was a student at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Olivet College has arranged to admit up to 25 students from Dillard University, a fellow United Church of Christ-affiliated institution. The college will donate their tuition back to Dillard to assist in the rebuilding process.

Olivet is also assisting 18 other New Orleans residents. They are members of Olivet senior Greg Ravys family, who were displaced following hurricane damage. The college provided the family with bus transportation from Louisiana and organized housing for them on-campus and within the community.
