Olivet College commencement scheduled for May 20

OLIVET, Mich. Olivet College will recognize approximately 190 students as part of graduation ceremonies Saturday, May 20. Baccalaureate begins at 11 a.m. in the Olivet Congregational Church, followed by commencement at 1:30 p.m., at the colleges Cutler Athletic Complex. In the event of inclement weather, commencement will be held at the Upton Center.
The commencement speaker is Marty Mitchell, Ed.D., president and chief executive officer of Starr Commonwealth, a nationally and internationally recognized private, non-profit organization with locations in Michigan and Ohio. Starrs services range from foster care to residential treatment and in-home counseling to programs that help young people learn to live independently.
Dan Bonnell of Otsego is the senior class speaker. Speaking at baccalaureate are seniors Wendy Mickelwait of Middleville and Chad Folkersma of Rudyard.
Mitchell has trained and written extensively in the areas of teamwork, leadership and group dynamics, and is frequently interviewed by the media on topics impacting youth in todays society. He has appeared on CBSs news program 48 Hours.
Mitchells professional affiliations include serving on the boards of Olivet College, Monarch Community Bank, International Association of Social Educators, StarrVista Care Management Organization, No Disposable Kids, Inc., National Resource Center for the Healing of Racism, and Michigan Federation for Children and Families, as well as the advisory board for the Journal of Urban Youth Culture.
Mitchell earned a bachelors degree from Olivet in 1973, a masters degree from Purdue University and doctorate in education from Western Michigan University.
