Olivet College to host Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame inductions
Sep 15, 2006

OLIVET, Mich. The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame will honor Nicholas Simone of Iron Mountain and Larry Thomas of Portland, at its 13th annual induction ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 20, on the campus of Olivet College.

Simone has served as president of the Upper Peninsula Independent Agents as well as the Independent Insurance Agents of Michigan. He was also a member of the Associations Education Committee and the Legislative, Personal Lines and Commercial Lines committees, as well as the Upper Peninsula Political Action Committee, where he was a legislative liaison to Upper Peninsula lawmakers on insurance-related issues. His dedication to educating insurance agents led to the implementation of the Convention Committee, which created the Agent Product Knowledge and Education Program. Simone was also the recipient of the Waldo Hildebrand Lifetime Achievement Award for his service and contribution to the insurance industry. Throughout his career, Simone has continued to give back to his community and has served on several city and county boards. He is also a member of the American Legion, VFW, and Cancer Foundation and was recently inducted into the Sons of Italy.

Thomas retired in 2005 after serving 37 years with Farm Bureau Insurance, the last of which were spent as its chief executive officer (CEO). Under his leadership, Farm Bureau Insurance Company of Michigan was the first Michigan company to be named to the top 50 life insurers in America. While serving as CEO, Thomas also helped develop the companys community relations programs including health and fitness programs for school kids; Scholar-Athlete Awards for Michigan students who excel in academics, sports and community involvement; and the Memorial and Labor Day Runs across the Mackinaw Bridge. With the help of the companys legislative lobbyists, Thomas also helped advance and supported legislation that enabled the industry to enhance its service to insurance consumers.

The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame was established at Olivet College in 1994 as a way to pay tribute to individuals who have made a significant impact on the ability of the Michigan insurance and risk management industry to serve the public. An election panel, representing a cross-section of the insurance and risk management business, identifies leaders and/or innovators who have made significant contributions in five areas: education, exemplary service, legislative activity, product/service development and recruiting new participants.
