Olivet College accepting entries for the Abbie M. Copps Poetry Competition

OLIVET, Mich.The Olivet College Department of Humanities is accepting entries for its 44th annual Abbie M. Copps Poetry Competition. Deadline for entries is Thursday, Feb. 1; grand prize is $150.

The winning poem will be announced by poet Elizabeth Kerlikowske during a reading of her work, Tuesday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Dole Halls Klock Commons. Kerlikowske is the author of two chapbooks of poetry, a collection of childrens stories, and a prose poem memoir of her father. Kerlikowske also teaches at Kellogg Community College and is the president of Friends of Poetry, an organization dedicated to the enjoyment of the reading and writing of poetry.

Only unpublished, unsigned poems of 100 lines or less are accepted. There is no limit to the number of entries per person, but there is a $2.50 per poem fee. Entries should be submitted in an envelope containing the unsigned, typed poem(s), entry fee, a sealed envelope containing the name, address and phone number of the poet. On the outside of the enclosed envelope, include the first line of the poem.

The competition was named after Copps, who was a member of the Olivet faculty for 48 years and retired in 1968. She was chair of the English Department and was made professor emerita upon her retirement. She passed away in 1973.
