Olivet College announces its poet-in-residence
Jan 12, 2007

OLIVET, Mich. John Rybicki has been named Olivet Colleges poet-in-residence for the 2007 Intensive Learning Term (ILT), according to an announcement made by Kirk Hendershott-Kraetzer, chair of the Humanities Department. The department received almost 50 applications for the new annual Sandburg-Auden-Stein Residency, which was named after poets who visited Olivet in the 30s and 40s.

During the colleges ILT session, which runs from April 24 until May 18, Rybicki will live on campus and teach a poetry writing class. He will also host two public events including a reading of his work and a stand-alone discussion on a subject of his choice. He will receive a $3,100 stipend, room and board.

Rybicki received a bachelors degree and masters in fine arts in creative writing from Western Michigan University in 1983 and 1991, respectively. His stories and poems have been featured in Poetry, Antioch Review and The North American Review, as well as various anthologies. He is also the author of three books of poetry, including his latest collection titled We Bed Down Into Water, from Northwestern University Press, which will be released in the fall 2007.

Besides writing fiction stories and poetry, Rybicki enjoys teaching about creative writing and poetry, and was featured in Time Magazine for Kids as an outstanding writing teacher. He has served as a guest lecturer at several colleges across the United States and taught creative writing and poetry classes at Swarthmore College, the University of Chicago, Kalamazoo College and Western Michigan University. He also taught young writers for six summers at Interlochen Center for the Arts, and is the director of the Gull Lake Conference for Young Writers.
