Feb 07, 2007

OLIVET, Mich. Two Olivet College students were among 17 Michigan Press Foundation scholarship award winners honored during the Michigan Press Association (MPA) Winter Convention, Feb. 2-3 in Grand Rapids. Awardees were nominated by newspaper advisers and chosen by MPA Foundation board members.

Eleni Mitropoulos, a junior from Bronson and personal interest major, was one of 10 journalism students from around the state to receive $1,000 and a plaque honoring her current work and career aspirations. Mitropoulos, who is serving her second year as editor of The Echo, Olivets student newspaper, was singled out for her academic and co-curricular achievements, as well as her work on the newspaper.

Nicole Babcock, a junior from Three Rivers and a journalism/mass communications and sports/recreation management double major, was recognized for completing the MPA Foundation High School Match Intern Program. Babcock spent two summers at the Three Rivers Commercial News through this internship program, working in the newsroom where she earned a salary and a $2,000 college scholarship. Babcock is a member of The Echo newspaper staff and the womens soccer team.

More than 150 college students and 150 newspaper professionals from across the state and Midwest attended the two-day convention at the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. Guest luncheon speaker was Gov. Jennifer Granholm.
