Abbie Copps poetry contest winners announced at Olivet College
Mar 22, 2007

OLIVET, Mich. Olivet College hosted the 44th annual Abbie Copps Poetry Competition Tuesday, March 20 in Dole Halls Klock Commons. The winning poems were announced by poet Elizabeth Kerlikowske during the event.

Jessica Walsh, of Roselle, Ill., won first place for her poem Ataraxis. Honorable mention awards went to Notes On Music, by Rebecca Pulsifer, of Charlotte, and The Other Blue Shoe, by Elinor Benedict, of Naples, Fla. Pulsifer was present at the event and read her own poem, while Kerlikowske read the other two.

Since 1964, unpublished poems from across the world have been sent to Olivet College and judged as part of the Abbie Copps Poetry Competition. Cash prizes are awarded and top poems are printed in the Garfield Lake Review, the colleges literary arts magazine.

The competition was named after Copps, who was a member of the Olivet faculty for 48 years and retired in 1968. She was chair of the English Department and was made professor emerita upon her retirement. She passed away in 1973.
