Olivet College enrollment nears record high
Aug 01, 2008

Olivet Colleges student housing facilities are near capacity, as the college embarks on record high enrollment for the 2008-09 academic year.

According to an announcement by Larry Vallar, vice president for enrollment management at Olivet, 500 new students have already enrolled for the fall semester, a number that is increasing daily. With the total number of students projected to reach 1,100, space is limited in the colleges dormitories. Housing units for male students are full, while only a few openings remain for female students.

Although housing facilities are near capacity, those who wish to attend Olivet College are still encouraged to apply. Openings are still available for students who plan to commute to Olivet, while those who do not receive a living space in the colleges dormitories will be put on a waiting list.

Olivets fall enrollment has surpassed the 1,000-student plateau for five consecutive years. Enrollment continues to increase substantially, thanks to improved facilities, programs, and recruiting and retention efforts. During the past year, the college has constructed or renovated several buildings on campus, including the Cutler Events Center, Ruth Rawlings Mott Auditorium, Gillette Student Village, Dr. Paul H. and Ruth B. Engle Chemistry Laboratory, Frederick S. Upton Center Natatorium, Mott Academic Center classrooms, and a track and visitors stands at the Cutler Athletic Complex. In addition, faculty members are currently reviewing academic departments and developing new majors to meet students changing needs. Recruiting efforts have also improved, thanks in part to the implementation of the Olivet College Community Connection Grant, which significantly reduces the cost of tuition for area students.

This will be our best year for enrollment in the history of Olivet College, said Vallar. Our new students are extremely excited about the college, its new facilities and the uniqueness of our small campus. We are also quickly becoming a destination for commuter students, as well. Being located in south central Michigan affords many of our local students the convenience of attending a four-year institution at an affordable price.
