Oct 22, 2008

Journalists for the Olivet College student newspaper, The Echo, won six Division III school awards in the Michigan Press Association (MPA) College Newspaper Contest in Lansing.

The top honor was given to Brad Francis, a 2008 graduate from Bellevue, who received a first-place award for his article titled Facebook Foibles. A second-place award went to Maggie Gustafson, a sophomore from Sparta, for her sports photo titled This is Our House. Gustafson also received an honorable mention for her column, titled What Irks Me. Echo production staff received a second-place award for their sports page design in the Jan. 25, 2008 edition of the newspaper. Sara Townsend, a 2008 graduate from Alpena, received a third-place award for her feature photo titled I Believe I Can Fly and Christine Moulton, a sophomore from Royal Oak, also received a third place award for her investigative article titled The Curtain Stalls on Theatre.

The contest was open to student newspaper members of the MPA and was cosponsored by the Michigan Collegiate Press Association, an association composed of advisers to MPA student newspaper members. The newspapers competed in one of three divisions, including: Division I (papers published more than weekly); Division II (papers published weekly); and Division III (two-year college publications or schools publishing less than weekly). Entries included editorial content, design, photos, general excellence, advertising sections and online editions.
