Olivet College to celebrate Foundersí Day Feb. 18
Feb 05, 2009

Olivet College will commemorate its 165th year by celebrating Founders Day Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 1:30 p.m. in the Olivet Congregational Church United Church of Christ. The program, featuring Olivet College President Don Tuski, Ph.D., and the Rev. Mark Jensen, D.D., D.H.D. 89, is free and open to the public.

Since 1980, Jensen has served as senior minister of North Congregational Church in Farmington Hills. He is involved with numerous community boards and committees, and in 1999 was elected moderator of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches.

Jensen was elected to the Olivet College Board of Trustees in 1987 and was bestowed a Doctor of Divinity, honoris causa, from Olivet in 1989. He earned a bachelors degree from the University of Minnesota, a Master of Divinity from Colgate Rochester Divinity School in Rochester, N.Y., and did Doctor of Ministry work at Andover Newton Theological School in Boston.

Olivet was founded in 1844 by congregational missionaries led by Father John J. Shipherd and was one of the first colleges in the United States to admit women and minorities. In 1859, a state charter was granted, and in 1863, Olivet graduated its first class, which consisted of three women.
