Olivet College students help build home for low-income family
Sep 17, 2009

Nineteen Olivet College students and two staff members recently spent a weekend constructing a home for a low-income family near Pittsburgh, Pa. The group partnered with Hosanna Industries, an organization that provides new construction and home rehabilitation programs for low income, elderly and single-parent households, as part of the colleges monthly service trip program.

In one full day of work, the students were able to completely rough in the interior and exterior walls of a 1,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home. Thanks in part to the students volunteer work, labor was provided for the project at no cost to the family.

Rev. Mike Fales, director of service learning and campus ministries, coordinated the trip. Assisting Fales was Jean Paul Cortes, a 2009 Olivet graduate who now serves as the colleges Michigan Campus Compact AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer.

Students who participated in the trip include: Sarah Augustine, a freshman from Bellevue; Zachary Burgess, a sophomore from Dimondale; Megan Dobbertien, a sophomore from Marshall; Michael Glenn, a junior from Cassopolis; Dominique Hayes-Carr, a freshman from Battle Creek; Kimberlyn Hovey, a freshman from Homer; Jessica Howard, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind.; Brian Johnson, a senior from Lansing; Ashley Kirchmeier, a sophomore from Olivet; Brittany Marshall, a sophomore from Canton, Ga.; Hannah Merz, a freshman from Eaton Rapids; Kelsey Miller, a freshman from Eaton Rapids; Traci Newsome, a freshman from Springport; Dorothy Post, a non-traditional student from Potterville; Rianna Rowles, a sophomore from South Haven; Eleri Thomas, a freshman from Bellevue; Colby Votava, a sophomore from Marshall; Aaron Vorce, a sophomore from Marshall; and Autumn Williams, a freshman from Albion.

This was the first of Olivet Colleges monthly service trips for the 2009-10 academic year. The next trip is planned for Oct. 2-4 and will take place in Morgan and Scott counties in Tennessee.
