Olivet College to host jazz concert Dec. 1

The Olivet College Jazz Band and Jazz Combo will present a concert Tuesday, Dec. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Olivet Congregational Church. Please note, the location has changed from the Oaks Theatre to the church. The concert is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Jon Gewirtz, adjunct instructor of music, the band will perform a wide variety of jazz from composers such as Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Oliver Nelson and Richard Rogers. Styles range from classic jazz standards, like The Lady is a Tramp, featuring senior Jeremy Adams, to James Brown inspired songs, such as The Chicken. Nearly all of the performers are featured as soloists throughout the concert.

In addition, the student led Jazz Combo features improvised solos by members in a small group setting.

Performers include: Adams, from Novi (piano and vocals); Nicolas Adsit, a sophomore from Muskegon (trumpet); Jesse Barber, a senior from Vandalia (trumpet); Dustin Byrd, assistant professor of humanities (drums); Zac Coddaire, a sophomore from Lake Odessa (trumpet); Evan Cusumano, a sophomore from Richmond (baritone saxophone); Marcus Darden, assistant professor of computer science (tenor saxophone); Doug Fales, a freshman from Olivet (guitar); Justin Gargus, a senior from Bangor (bass); Kait Greathouse, a freshman from Eaton Rapids (trombone); Kenny Lowe, a sophomore from Lansing (tenor saxophone); LuAnn Pickford, a sophomore from Sherwood (alto saxophone); Dakota Rhodes, a freshman from Olivet (trombone); Patrick Sjolander, a freshman from Charlotte (trumpet); Fran Hinchman-Smith, a freshman from Grand Junction (trumpet); Seth Story, a senior from Ithaca (trombone); and Blake Walters, a senior from Olivet (alto saxophone).
