Olivet College names new sports broadcast team
Dec 08, 2009

Olivet College students Jefferson Matthews, a junior from Battle Creek, and Matthew Weaver, a freshman from Marshall, have been selected as the new sports broadcasting team for the Olivet Comets 2009-10 basketball season. The pair will announce all home games of the mens and womens teams, both junior varsity and varsity, on the college radio station, WOCR-FM. The FCC-licensed station broadcasts on a frequency of 89.7 megahertz. All programming on WOCR is also streamed live on the Internet at www.wocrfm.com. Matthews and Weaver were selected by Gary Smith, assistant professor of journalism/mass communication (JMC) and director of the JMC program.

Matthews is a history major and is pursuing a double minor in political science and journalism/mass communication. He will also serve as play-by-play anchor during games. Matthews previously covered sports events for the Hometown TV channel, WMHW-FM radio and Battle Creek Access Vision.

A 2009 graduate of Marshall High School, Weaver is a biology and pre-medicine major. Weavers work with WOCR-FM will be his first radio experience.

According to Smith, live sports broadcasts on WOCR and the Internet serve a dual purpose. The campus community, alumni and families of the players can hear coverage of every game, and the announcers get the opportunity to develop and improve their broadcasting skills, he said.
